In the May 2015 issue, one of the reports is about Marketing. Marketing is one of my favorite topics when it comes to the field of education in general, but much more, libraries. The title of the article is called, Marketing in the Real World. Interestingly enough, even with all the avenues concerning social media, the old fashion ways of marketing are still effective.
Maintaining a seasonal theme and then applying to different formats are usually the first steps. Billboards are still useful in he library realm, as well as posters, postcards, yard signs, and bookmarks.
Billboards might considered too expense for a library budget based on the opinions of the administrative staff, but considering the amount of exposure one has, it might prove effective.
Posters are great, but research has shown that hanging them around the school instead of in the library alone is the way to market with this type of media.
Both postcards and bookmarks with appealing art and a tag line on the front and in the information about a program on the back is another way of marketing.
Last, yardsigns are effective for widespread promotion and are viewed as mini-billboards. Again, they should be placed in well-thought out areas so they get the most views.
A great program to implement on the school library is for students, teachers, parents, and members of the community to create these means of advertising. As a parent, I wish the teachers would ask the parents and community to participate more.
